Tokyo Highlights

These are our recommendations from our recent visit to Tokyo, Japan.  We visited the Meiji Jingu, the tranquil Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Symphony Lunch Cruise, Happ En Garden, Sumo Wrestling, Karaoke.

Meiji Jingu

Surrounded by serene Gardens Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine. Shinto is Japan’s ancient original religion. This shrine is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken. The nearest train stop is Yoyogi. We walked past the wine barrels that represent the Emperor Meiji’s relationship with France and his enjoyment of their wine, these sit opposite the decorative Sake barrels. Almost all of the 100,000 shrubs and trees in the gardens surrounding the Shrine were donated from all parts of Japan. Before entering the shrine, we carried out the hand cleansing ritual. We walked past the couples tree and the prayer station. Not allowed to take photos at the Temple but can go up to say a prayer to the Gods.Gardens of the Imperial Palace

The gardens surrounding the Imperial Palace are free to the public to visit and enjoy. The highlight of the visit was the Irises Beautiful varients of purple. It is a serene location in the centre of Tokyo with countless examples of Japanese Bonsai and a popular place for Tokyo locals to spend time.

Symphony Lunch Cruise

Worth seeing Tokyo from the sea and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. The carved fruit is beautiful, a scenic view of the harbour can be enjoyed while eating lunch.

Happ En Garden

A beautiful location and venue. Walk through the gardens past the 100 year old bonsai tree collection. Have drinks in the serene gardens then enter a well appointed function room for a 5 course meal and fun Japanese entertainment with drummers, dancers and acrobats. Booked mainly for weddings we attended a conference event at the amazing venue.

Sumo Wrestling

We enjoyed a delicious dinner and entertaining sumo wrestling display at a resturant in the Hananomai region of Tokyo. The meal was a delicious mix of cook your own various sharing dishes. Part way through the dinner a narrated, and very entertaining, Sumo wrestling display took place between two retired Sumo wrestlers.

Karaoke

A very, very entertaining experience, especially if travelling with a group. We visited a dress up Karaoke Bar. We hired a private room for two hours and could order drinks as required.

ANA Intercontinental Hotel

Our accommodation in Tokyo was at the 4 star ANA Intercontinental Hotel. This features well-appointed rooms, comfortable beds and a great buffet breakfast selection. Make sure you have a cocktail or meal at the 36th Floor bar and restaurant . This was a highlight of our stay with stunning views of the city and we watched the sunset with a spectacular red sun (the photo doesn’t do it justice).
